Prospects for Syria: Revolution, Counter Revolution, and Solidarity

Another brutal chapter is concluding in the Syrian war. We have watched in horror as Assad has brought more and more areas under his domination again, backed by Russian and Iranian war machines. The scale of displacement and suffering caused by this conflict is one of the great crimes of our time.

Still, there are many fights for democracy, freedom, and dignity still underway among the peoples of Syria and its region. We are hoping you’ll join us in learning some context to these struggles after five long years of struggle. and the brutal responses to them by local and global powers. Many are still looking to the future, and wondering what it will bring - some of these people will be joining us in Toronto to share their thoughts, and hopefully hear from you!

Our speakers will include:

- Joseph Daher, author of Hezbollah: The Political Economy of Lebanon’s Party of God (2016)
- Leila Al-Shami, co-author of Burning Country: Syrians in Revolution and War (2016)
- Shiar Neyo, London-based Kurdish-Syrian activist
- Mostafa Henaway, Montreal-based Palestinian solidarity activist and organizer with the Immigrant Workers Centre

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Jens Hannsen, Associate Professor of Arab Civilization at the University of Toronto, and a member of Toronto’s Syrian Solidarity Collective

Please join us at 1 King’s College Circle at the University of Toronto on February 9, 2017 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.
