Gary McHale

As a somewhat neutral observer of the Caledonia situation, I carefully watched all the footage on Gary McHale's visit to the troubled area. My assessment is based on my own opinion, I am not racist nor am I strong believer in segregating members of our Canadian society either geographically, legally or financially. I believe that every member of our country should pay taxes if they are employed, I believe that every member should be treated equally by government and legal officials. The very concept of " a race of people using a historic episode to claim land" is really kind of silly. The fact that the natives lived on the land should not be foundation for ownership. If that were the case "squatting" would be a much loved activity these days. Coming back to the victors of a long and ludicrous war saying "can we please have our spoils back" seems kind of silly to me . Let history go and deal with tomorrow. We are all equal and should be treated so. No reservations, no tax exemptions etc. This can not possibly be construed as racist if people are preaching equality. If anyone, of any race takes over government land and interferes with society's business then off to jail they should go. Gary McHale may not be likeable but I see nothing racist in his message. It may disturb some natives who actually believe that the land their great, great, grandparents lived on should be their financial windfall today. I think instead of everyone chasing their tails in Caledonia, they should be looking at disbanding reservations and assisting natives in ridding their areas of ongoing problems i.e. babies having babies, kids dropping out of school at an alarming rate, drugs and alcohol being overlooked by the parents, unemployment and the tendency to live exclusively off government money. Many people should visit chatrooms and talk to the young natives and get a current view from them.
