Dear friends,
We are happy to announce that the third issue of Upping the Anti will be going to press in late October of 2006.
This issue will feature a rich assortment of content focusing on anti-imperialist struggles. We are printing interviews with Aijaz Ahmad on the anti-imperialism of our times, William Robinson on contemporary anti-capitalist struggles in Latin America, and Taiaiake Alfred on colonialism and indigenous resistance in Canada today. Our articles include: Isabel McDonald writing on Canadian complicity in the occupation of Haiti, Tom Keefer reporting on the significance of the Six Nations struggle for anti-capitalist activists, Andrew Thompson engaging with the arguments of Richard Day’s “Gramsci is Dead”, and RJ Maccani assessing the rise of the Zapatistas and the lessons to be drawn from their experience in the changing political terrain of Mexico.
In our roundtable section, we bring together a variety of different activists who have been working to support the Six Nations land reclamation. We also include an article based on a series of interviews with longtime activists on issues of activist burnout and sustainability written by Jen Plyler. Finally, we review a number of different books including Dan Bergers’s “Weather Underground: Outlaws of America”, Inga Muscio’s “Autobiography of a Blue-Eyed Devil” and the recent volume “Sociology for Changing the World” by Caelie Frampton et al.
We would also like to take this opportunity to encourage our supporters to contribute financially in order to help us continue our project. Because our journal is entirely independent (we have no outside source of funding), we would like to request that if you appreciate our work that you consider making a financial donation to our project (however modest it may be!).
Upping the Anti is published twice a year. A one-year subscription to the journal is $20, a two-year subscription is $35, and back issues of Volumes 1 and 2 are available for $10 each. We especially encourage those who are financially able to consider purchasing a lifetime subscription to the journal for $250; this lifetime subscription (your life or ours -- whichever expires first!) entitles you to all back and future issues of Upping the Anti, along with other non-journal materials (pamphlets and DVDs that are currently in the works).
Please make all checks payable to *"UTA Publications"* and mail them to “998 Bloor St. West, P.O. Box 10571, Toronto, ON Canada, M6H 4H9.
We have successfully distributed previous issues of Upping the Anti throughout Canada and internationally. We welcome any assistance with distribution; if you would like to distribute the journal in your area, please arrange to receive bulk copies of Upping the Anti at a discounted price by e-mailing uta_distro@yahoo.ca. If you are a distributor who owes us money from the previous issue, don't be shy about getting in touch with us to settle up and arrange to receive copies of the new issue!
