3rd Issue of Upping the Anti coming out in early November

We are happy to announce that the third issue of Upping the Anti will be going to press in late October of 2006.
This issue will feature a rich assortment of content focusing on anti-imperialist struggles. We are printing interviews with Aijaz Ahmad on the anti-imperialism of our times, William Robinson on contemporary anti-capitalist struggles in Latin America, and Taiaiake Alfred on colonialism and indigenous resistance in Canada today. Our articles include: Isabel McDonald writing on Canadian complicity in the occupation of Haiti, Tom Keefer reporting on the significance of the Six Nations struggle for anti-capitalist activists, Andrew Thompson engaging with the arguments of Richard Day’s “Gramsci is Dead”, and RJ Maccani assessing the rise of the Zapatistas and the lessons to be drawn from their experience in the changing political terrain of Mexico.

Kate Kempton, a lawyer with Olthuis Kleer Townshend in Toronto, with
expertise in indigenous peoples' rights, environmental and social

This event is being put on in the spirit of peace and togetherness and
is designed as a safe environment for discussion and exchange of ideas
about the possible ways that the issue of Six Nations land claims can be
peacefully and justly resolved. All open-minded people interested in
genuine discussion and dialogue are welcome.

CUPE workers at the City of Toronto are now into their second week of a strike. They are holding the line against the drive by government and business employers demanding concessions and wage rollbacks. The employers are telling workers they should pay for the economic crisis of capitalism. This is an important struggle for the whole union movement and, indeed, for all struggles for social justice in the coming period. The Bullet presents here two statements in support of Toronto workers, one from the Socialist Project and another from the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP). We encourage other movements and organizations also to show their solidarity.
The Socialist Project supports the 24,000 members of CUPE 79 and 416 (Canadian Union of Public Employees) on strike for equity, justice and in defence of the rights they have fought for over past decades. These union members normally work in areas of public health, homes for the aged, parks and recreation, social services, libraries, as well as housing and court services, road maintenance, snow removal, animal rescue, as well as garbage and recycling collection.

Pro-Israel Lobby Alarmed by Growth of Boycott, Divestment Movement

The movement to call Israel to account for its crimes against the Palestinian people is growing. It is “invading the mainstream discourse, becoming part of the constant and unrelenting drumbeat against Israel.” It could eventually threaten the existence of the Jewish state by undermining the support it receives from its strongest backer, the U. S. government. That was the message of alarm delivered by the Executive Director of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Howard Kohr, to the AIPAC Policy Conference on May 3.[1]
AIPAC is one of the principal organizations that lobby publicly on behalf of Israel in the United States, where it is an important influence on foreign policy. Among the 6,000 dignitaries who attended its policy conference were more than half of the members of the Senate and a third of the members of the House of Representatives. Featured speakers included Vice President Joe Biden, Senator John Kerry, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli President Shimon Peres.
